Prefers that buildings not be moldy (helps to be in the sun) - Deb
Prefers that buildings not interfere with the view from the porch - Deb and Carol
Prefers not having a building along the road south of the house - Dave
Out back past the oak tree in the ground cleared last year - Dave and Carol prefer this at the moment - Concern about mold, because of the trees and it being on the north side of the hill - Debris from trees may be a problem for any rain collection system (if we put a shower room with the new bunkhouse) - Advantages and disadvantages to being relatively far from the old house (Less noise, Relieves congestion - people and cars - around the old house, Inconvenient for getting back and forth to the old house (food, deck, ...) or back and forth to the new showers for those in the old house - We'll need to eventually move this direction regardless, because this is where the "flat" ground is. - Risk (or maybe opportunity?) that those back there will stay back there (develop two separate centers)
Below the 1998 Bunkhouse - Takes space away from the yard - Might block the breeze and certainly the view from the 1998 Bunkhouse windows - Might reduce the sunlight getting to the 1998 Bunkhouse
At the edge of the yard south-west of the old house - Might interfere with the view from the porch? - Kind of far from the road (unless a new road is added)
At the edge of the road south of the house - Dave doesn't care for this - Would change the appearance of the approach to the old house - It would be a long way from a possible future center of operations out back past the oak tree. - It couldn't be seen from the porch door. - The buildings would look nicely symmetric from across the road, so no question about us being red-necks. - It would be fairly open to the sun? - It would use the existing road. - It would be near the old house. - People wouldn't be able to leave their vehicles right outside their rooms, as they would out back. - That hillside is pretty steep, so maybe that makes the back of the structure too far off the ground?
The only thing that I worry about is putting a bunk house up over the hill where the current clearing is. I just don't like the idea of people being so isolated and far apart from everyone else. I also agree with Aunt Carol and Aunt Debbie on not blocking the view from the porch. I'm ok sleeping where ever and think that a second shower might be handy...at least it would help with the line at night but I don't like the idea of building a "second old house"..with a kitchen, porch, etc. that might tempt people to split up. What's meaningful to me about Kentucky isn't the "getting away" part, but spending the weekend with all of my family and I think part of the fun is all being bunched together.
I'm also against the big kitchen in the woods, which I just read about on the blog....basically for all the same reasons as mentioned before. I just can't imagine waking up to any other noise other than my aunts laughing and cooking in the kitchen, it's the only thing I've found thus far that can wake me up and not make me grumpy...so you know that's mighty powerful stuff.
I finally got a price together on the bigger bunkhouse (see spreadsheet). I estimated for a 16x70 floor...seven 10x12 rooms...and a covered 4x70 porch. As you will be able to see I got prices from Lowes and from my lumber yard. All of the OSB can come from Lowes...unless it is crazy expensive in Paintsville. Around here Lowes is cheaper. 200 sheets would be a lot to haul around. If anyone has something in particular they don't see or want to see, let me know.
The 12/30/08 estimate for a 5 room bunkhouse (4 bedrooms and a bath/shower room) is available here.
